How does the Hijri calendar work?
The Hijri year follows the Moon: each month has 29 or 30 days and the Hijri year is 354 or 355 days — about 11 days shorter than a solar year.
That is why lunar occasions arrive about 11 days earlier in the Solar Hijri calendar every year; the Solar Hijri equivalent of a Hijri date cannot be guessed from the previous year.
This site’s method: the Umm al-Qura calendar
Hijri calculation in this tool uses the Umm al-Qura calendar — the same method behind the lunar side of this site’s calendar and occasions. Its output therefore matches the Hijri display in the calendar.
This method is tabular, not sighting-based, so it is not necessarily identical to an officially announced moon-sighting date; where they differ, the official announcement governs religious practice and public holidays.
Why can it differ by one day?
Hijri calendars are not all computed the same way: tabular calendars like Umm al-Qura derive the first of the month from fixed rules, while sighting-based methods set it by observing the crescent. The two can differ by one day for a given month.
A concrete case: on the Umm al-Qura basis, Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 has 29 days, so 30 Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 does not exist and that day counts as 1 Muharram 1447 (26 June 2025). A method taking that month as 30 days shifts this day by one.
Official holidays and occasions
For Iran’s official holidays and occasions, the country’s official calendar is authoritative; see the full list in 1405 public holidays. If an officially announced Hijri date differs from this tool by one day, the official announcement takes precedence.

Frequently asked questions about Hijri to Solar Hijri
How do I convert a Hijri date to Solar Hijri?
Enter the Hijri year (for example 1447), pick the Hijri month, enter the day and press “Convert to Solar Hijri”. Example: 1 Ramadan 1447 equals Wednesday, 18 February 2026 and 29 Bahman 1404.
What is this site’s Hijri calculation basis?
The basis is the Umm al-Qura calendar — the same method behind the lunar side of the site’s calendar and occasions. It is tabular, not sighting-based, and may differ by up to one day from an officially announced moon sighting.
Why does this tool differ by one day from an announced calendar?
Because methods differ: some calendars derive the first of the month from tabular rules and others from crescent observation. For a given month the two can differ by one day; the official announcement governs in such cases.
Why do the Solar Hijri equivalents of lunar occasions shift every year?
The lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so the same occasion arrives about 11 days earlier in the Solar Hijri calendar each year and cannot be guessed from last year’s date.
Are Hijri months always 30 days?
No; Hijri months have 29 or 30 days as the basis determines. For example, on the Umm al-Qura basis Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 has 29 days, so 30 Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 does not exist and that day is 1 Muharram 1447.
Data source and limits
Conversion on this page uses this site’s calendar engine (assets/js/date-core.js) on the Umm al-Qura basis; the table examples are generated with the same engine and no date is hand-written in the HTML. Other Hijri calculation methods (including sighting-based ones) may differ by up to one day; for Iran’s official holidays and occasions, the country’s official calendar governs.
